The Work That Got Noticed

Nobody pitched this. Dave Baggott, owner and president of the Ogden Raptors, had been watching what we did in Modesto, and he said so out loud, in public, before we ever put a bottle in a batting stance.

They created some great branding with the Modesto Roadsters. I wanted to tap into their sense of humor and boy did they deliver.

That is the whole business development strategy, and we don't have another one. Do work good enough that the next client finds you.

The Assignment

Every Saturday night the Raptors would stop being the Raptors. The alter ego had to hold up under that, all season, in front of the same people.

Dave has said publicly where the push came from: a March conversation with Clint Betts of Silicon Slopes, who told him to think past Ogden and Weber County and build something the whole state could claim. That reframed the job. Not a city identity. A Utah one.

Which rules out most of what makes alternate identities fail. Not generic baseball. Not weird for weird's sake. Not a gag with a five-minute shelf life that everybody's embarrassed by in August.

The job wasn't to make something strange. It was to make something specific enough to get loved.

Then There Was Fry Sauce

Utah has been arguing about fry sauce since the sixties. Ketchup and mayonnaise, roughly, and don't get anybody started on the ratio. It is completely ordinary and completely theirs.

The bottle isn't a logo with a face stuck on it. It's a ballplayer. Headband, gloves, cleats, a sneer, and a crinkle-cut fry choked up like a bat. The state of Utah sits behind it as the frame, not a badge bolted to the corner, the actual container the whole thing lives in. The lettering drips, because the one thing everyone knows about fry sauce is what it does to a napkin.

Building the World

A logo is a test you can pass and still fail. The real question is whether the idea survives contact with a t-shirt, a cap panel, a jersey back at forty yards, and a bottle on a shelf. Two pieces of the system did that quiet structural work.

The number set

Every numeral is built from crinkle-cut fries. Nobody asks for that and everybody notices it. It means a jersey back is still on-concept from the cheap seats, where the mark itself is too small to read.

The palette

The Raptors' own Dark Royal carries straight through, so the alter ego sits beside the parent club instead of fighting it. Sauce pink does the heavy lifting; ketchup red, fry gold and a mustard warm fill out the rest. Ten colours, every one specified as a spot ink, because this was always going to end up on cotton and glass, not screens.

Then Dave Sent This Message

Before the reveal, Dave told us the plan: he would introduce the identity himself, in a video played before the players took the field, and it would explain the origin, the reasoning, and the design by you guys.

Four things in one sentence. It was done. He was going to explain it himself. He was going to say where it came from. And the credit was never in question, before a single reporter got near it.

It's either gonna go viral or it's gonna be a massive flop! Dave Baggott

He knew exactly what kind of swing it was. He took it anyway.

The Reveal

Saturday 30 May 2026. Lindquist Field. The video went up on the new board before first pitch, and Dave did exactly what he said he would.

The mascot came out the same night. The Raptors lost 11–6, and by the club's own account it didn't dent the room even slightly.

The Thing Became Real

Not a one-night stunt. A standing Saturday identity the club committed to for the season. Uniforms with sauce running off the collar and cuffs, one red sleeve and one white one for the two things in the bottle, fry numbers on the back under Get Saucy. Caps. Replica jerseys. And actual bottled fry sauce, which the club hoped would sell in businesses across the state, not just at the ballpark.

We didn't manufacture any of it, and we're not going to imply we did. What we did was build an idea sturdy enough to carry all of it.

Then It Escaped

The work became the reveal, and the reveal became the reaction. Here is the public record, sorted honestly, because a page that inflates its own press is a page nobody trusts twice.

Direct public attribution The branding and mascot design was created by "Slightly Obsessed Studios" in Modesto, Ca. "They created some great branding with the Modesto Roadsters, the newest city in the Pioneer League. I wanted to tap into their sense of humor and boy did they deliver," said Baggott.

The Payoff

Fry sauce didn't need us. Utah had been fighting about it for fifty years before we showed up.

What it needed was somebody willing to take it completely seriously: cleats, batting gloves, a number set built out of fries, ten spot colours specified for glass and cotton, and then hand it a bat.

Now go and think about what's sitting inside your brand that nobody has taken seriously yet.
